The very cool Sonia is hosting Prom for all us cool bloggers...
She's hung all the balloons, passed out the quarters, just in case we decided to drink, and she actually got a little freaky on the dance floor.
She's asked us to dig deep and recall those embarrassing memories we'd all like to forget...and, share those times with the world (well, blogging world)...just in case we didn't feel as embarrassed the first time around.
I dated Matt for almost a year before heading to Prom ...we went to two different High Schools. I went to the public high school...he went to the conservative Christian High School. Lots of snobby, rich kids, who probably felt forced to be at the school because their parents made them go...(phew, got that off my chest!)
Anyways, Matt was a great guy...very nice! (just to clear that up in case he ever reads this!)
In high school I was considered to be very quiet. If you knew me now, you'd probably think otherwise. I was very insecure and got nervous when talking with strangers. Now a days, I'll talk to the janitor at Target about cleaning up the bathrooms (yes, I did this the other day!)
In the midst of my nervousness, I looked hot. I felt pretty...short, white dress, matching heels, I ironed my hair, (I had a big perm with lots of curls), got my nails done...looking really good. He picked me up (in his cool red Fiero!) and we went to dinner. As I went to prom, not knowing a soul, we ate and mingled with his friends. His school had a banquet thing...no dancing...just dinner and entertainment. No one really talked to me...just kind of looking as if I was the 'outsider' coming to prom.
So, I excused myself and went to the bathroom. I waited in line and got in the stall and almost cried because I was so uncomfortable. Well, to make matters worse, I got locked in the stall. The screw in the lock had come loose and got jammed. I sat in there wondering how in the hell I was going to get out. I kept trying to shimmy the lock...nothing worked. It's now been 5 minutes of trying to get out...which felt like a lifetime.
Remember, I didn't know anyone...I then yelled over the stall...'anyone out there to help me get out?' Two girls tried getting me out and we all just couldn't get the thing loose. So here I am...all gussied up and stuck in the stall at a prom where I feel so uncomfortable...so what do I do? Kick off my heels, climb out underneath, in my pretty white dress, and viola!
The girls couldn't believe that I actually climbed out with my dress on.
I walked out and we finished dessert. I don't think I even told my date that it happened...
We then went home and caught the beginning of SNL. Yeah, no afterparty...nothing...just jeans and Adam Sandler! Come on, it was the early 90's and everyone loved SNL back then!
There, therapy session is over. I'm now going to go and make sure all my bathroom doors are up to code!

Oh man...that stinks. Did your dress come out clean? Or did you have skid marks from sliding under the stall?
Oh Aim.
I got stuck in a Port-A-Potty once.....
I feel for you, dear.
First, I have to comment on the Fiero -- Wow! He must have been the coolest guy EVER because that was the coolest in 1989.
Secondly, I got locked in a hotel bathroom for 3 hours while on Spring Break with my friends. While McGuyver could have escaped with a tampon and a nail file, I could not. When my friends finally came back they laughed for 15 minutes and then called hotel maintenance to get me out.
okay... you gals... getting locked in all these places! a port a potty... bless your heart!
your memories are so vivid... wow! i can only imagine! i would have done the same thing... crawled my behind out of there!
i can guarantee you were gorgeous & knocked the socks off MR. fancy Fiero! :)
What a great story. And yes, early 90s SNL was the ultimate!! Coming home from the Angels game tonight, my best friend and I heard Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody and yes, we could still do every move that Garth and Wayne did to that song in Wayne's World! It was a fun type of scary when we realized this.
I always wanted a Fiero when I was younger. Really.
Um...my prom was almost forgotten until reading your post. It brought back some memories.
I did not have a date to prom. Went with an old (female) friend from my old high school. my purse got stolen, the boy i wanted to be there with was with his girlfriend, and i thought i was the hottest thing there!
(rolling eyes) crazy, those high school memories.
My hubby was laughing as i read him your story. He wants to know why you didn't tell your date what happened. He said that would have made for some funny conversation.
LOL
